When Good Girls Go BadSandy, From Grease One vs. Stephanie, from Grease Two.Remember the sweet, innocent Sandy from the original Grease movie, played by Olivia Newton-John? The character of Rizzo (Stockard Channing), captured Sandy's character, quite expertly in the following song:Song: Look At Me, I'm Sandra Dee Artist: Stockard Channing Look at me, I'm Sandra Dee, lousy with virginity. Won't go to bed till I'm legally wed; I can't, I'm Sandra Dee. Watch it! Hey! I'm Doris Day, I was not brought up that way. Won't come across--even Rock Hudson lost his heart to Doris Day. I don't drink, or swear. I won't rat my hair. I get ill from one cigarette. Keep your filthy paws off my silky drawers. Would you pull that crap with Annette? And as for you, Troy Donahue, I know what you wanna do. You got your crust, I'm no object of lust. I'm just plain Sandra Dee. Elvis, Elvis, let me be; keep that pelvis far from me! Just keep your cool, now you're starting to drool. Hey, fungu, I'm Sandra Dee. Although Rizzo makes fun of Sandy in the song, the thing is, Sandy's a good girl. The girls should have been applauding Sandy's virtues and ethics. But no, they had to contribute to the warping of her sense of what is right and wrong. They had to bring her down to their level, with their poisoned hearts and raging jealousy. Then Sandy goes through the transformation, to win the heart of bad boy Danny Zuko (John Travolta). By the films' end, she's all black spandex and hooker-wigged out. Smoking. Writhing her hips suggestively. Inviting Danny Zuko to feel her up in the fun house. Nice. Real nice parable. They turn this sweet innocent girl into a tramp. She completely compromises her identity for the sake of getting the guy. Yeah, that's it. Be a phony and a tramp to trick the man into thinking you're something you're not so you can fly away into the sky in a car. Just when you thought you'd seen it all, it gets kookier. Along comes Grease 2. Newton-John's Sandy is replaced by Michelle Pfeiffer's Stephanie. Grease 2 takes us back to Rydell High but, with a whole different attitude. As sweet as Newton-John's Sandy was, Pfeiffer's Stephanie is a case study in contrast. Where Sandy was chirpy and sweet, Stephanie is bored, jaded and cynical. Dissatisfied with Rydell High and the apparent lack of tough guys, she's through with the leather-clad T-birds. They're so last year. She wants someone better than that. Someone thrilling, mysterious and exciting. Someone, yeah, someone like a cool rider. See for yourself. Song: Cool RiderMusic & Lyrics: Genners Wade Vocals: Michelle Pfeiffer If you really want to know What I want in a guy... Well, I'm lookin' for a dream on a mean machine With hell in his eyes. I want a devil in skin tight leather, And he's gonna be wild as the wind. And one fine night, I'll be holdin' on tight... To a coooool rider, a coooool rider. If he's cool enough, He can burn me through and through. Whhoa ohhhh If it takes forever, Then I'll wait forever. No ordinary boy, No ordinary boy is gonna do. I want a rider that's cool. That's the way it's gonna be, And that's the way that I feel. I want a whole lot more than the boy next door, I want hell on wheels. Just give me a fine motorcycle, With a man growin' out of the seat. And move aside, cause I'm gonna ride... (Chorus) I don't want no ordinary guys, Comin' on strong to me. They don't know what I'm lookin' for, They don't know what I need. They're gonna know when he gets here, Cause the crowd will be shakin'. I'll do anything to let him know, That I'm his, his for the takin'. I want a coooooool rider, A cool, cool, cool, cool rider. I want a coooooool rider, A cool, cool, cool, cool rider. I want a C-O-O-L R-I-D-E-R. I need a C-O-O-L R-I-D-E-R. (Repeat) |
